COVID-19 Action in the Biden Era: A Fireside Chat with Dr. Anthony Fauci

Dr. Anthony Fauci, Chief Medical Advisor to the President and Chair of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, joined the COVID Collaborative for a Fireside Chat on February 9th. In one of his first appearances since the start of the Biden-Harris Administration, Dr. Fauci touched on key issues like the vaccination effort, COVID variants, and the need to continue public health measures.

As the government continues to average over a million vaccinations a day, Dr. Fauci reminded us of the gold standard of disease prevention: getting vaccinated. Dr. Fauci estimates that herd immunity and a return to normalcy requires 70-85% of the country to be vaccinated against COVID-19. This is no small number, but Dr. Fauci was optimistic about the dedication of the American public to themselves and their communities. Dr. Fauci remained adamant that vaccination and mask-wearing is the most effective and reliable way to stop COVID-19 and return to a sense of normalcy. This is doubly important as variants from the UK and South Africa spread throughout America. Dr. Fauci reminded us that this is not the time for complacency and that the pandemic is not over yet. In order for our children to remain in school, businesses to reopen, and communities to stay safe and healthy, Dr. Fauci implored every American to get their vaccine as soon as possible. This is especially true for historically marginalized communities. The inequities which underscored our healthcare system, Dr. Fauci noted, have been present for decades and only now have burst into full view. It is imperative for the public to be responsible and adhere to public health safety measures to protect these vulnerable communities with comorbidities and reduced access to healthcare. On top of this, Dr. Fauci reminded us to take care of ourselves: to get exercise, eat healthy, and avoid stress. The pandemic has taken both a mental and physical toll on all of us, and the lasting impacts of the public health crisis may not be fully felt for years to come.

Dr. Fauci has worked tirelessly for months to ensure that the American public will endure and prosper through the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that a vaccine is available, it is time for all American adults to help their families and communities and get vaccinated. Dr. Fauci reminded us that, while the pandemic is not over yet, the end is within reach, as long as the American people can pull together for the common good as they have so many times before.
